Cutting portraits, generally in profile, from black card became popular in the mid-18th century, though the word “silhouette” was seldom used until the early 19th century, and the tradition has continued under this name into the 21st century.

3)How would you describe the work of modern artist "Kara Walker" and her use of the silhouette?
I believe her silhouettes are almost alive. They are very detailed and it's almost like they could walk off the photo. She is very creative.
